Santos Admits Complexity of Finding Peace in Colombian Conflict

Santos Admits Complexity of Finding Peace in Colombian Conflict President Juan Manuel Santos admitted today that it is confused and complex to dialog with the insurgency amidst war, thouygh he ratified his decision to maintain the offensive against the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People”s Army (FARC-EP).

Such a willingness Santos defined as a sort of balance, is contradictory to different sectors in the country, and even to the FARC-EP guerrila itself.

Activists, human rights defenders, farm communities, victims of the armed conflict and guerrila leaders demand the establishment of a truce by the parties involved in the confrontation in order to generate confidence around the peace process and minimize the victimization of the civilian population.

It is a great challenge to speak about peace and maintain the war, a challenge many people find difficult to understand, and I understand this difficulty, but it is the most effective way to achieve the end of confrontation as soon as possible, spare more victims and deaths, said Santos while explaining his stand, which is not understood by part of the Colombian society.

During the swearing-in ceremony of the new Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas, Santos said the country is going through a moment of inflection: we have to look to the future, but remain with the feet on the ground and continue fighting, he said.
