Guantanamo, is the most eastern province capital city of Cuba, is located at 981 kilometers away from Havana, the capital of the Island. It has a contrasting environment that includes wide areas ranging between the semi-desert to the exuberant vegetation of the mountains.
Guantanamo municipality borders to the north with Holguin, to the South with Caimanera, to the east with Niceto Perez and El Salvador, and to the west with Yateras and Manuel Tames municipalities. It has a territorial extension of 741, 3 square kilometers and a population of approximately 250 630 inhabitants.

Guantanamo has plenty of stony areas, eroded soils, and other regions full of vegetation with thin abundant cactus, opposite attracts to the stunning green of the forests.
In this municipality it is located the Ecological Natural Reserve of Hatibonico, with an area of more than five thousand hectares.
The Monitongos elevations are a very singular geographical landmark. There is also a wide range of endemic flora and fauna.
The National Park Alejandro de Humboldt is situated in this area, with beautiful landscapes which holds exotic vegetation, a typical trait of humid tropical forest. There is also the Sagua-Baracoa mountain range and the northern coastline fringe with gray sand beaches, bag bays and big rivers.
There are some studies that show the existence of a hundred kinds of exclusive vegetable species of the region, as well as 64 species of birds - 12 of them endemic – el carpintero real, finds safe refuge in this region among other mammals, including the manatee, an endargered species.
